Newsroom Awards: 2023 Best of News Design contest

Great news to share from the Society for News Design’s Best of News Design contest, where Inquirer journalists earned 23 awards — seven in digital design and 16 in print design. That haul represents the most citations The Inquirer has received in the SND competition’s 44-year history.

The Best of News Design is a juried competition recognizing excellence in print and digital storytelling, graphics, and social media, with a goal of identifying the best visual journalism that pushes the boundaries of design and technology. The Inquirer’s 2023 winners are: 

DIGITAL DESIGN

PRINT DESIGN

  • Where the Shore Sleeps, a doubletruck drone photograph by Monica Herndon, won a Silver Medal in Photography with Frank Weise (photo editor).
  • A portfolio of staff-designed pages, including Sports, Features, and News, won a Medal of Excellence in Staff Page Portfolio. 
  • Anton Klusener won a Medal of Excellence in Individual Page Portfolio. 
  • Down the Shore: Find the Turtles won a Medal of Excellence in Features Cover with Sterling Chen (designer), Suzette Moyer (art director), and Peter Gamlen (illustration) credited.
  • A More Perfect Union: Black Artists won a Medal of Excellence in Inside News Pages with Anton Klusener (designer) and staff photo editors credited.
  • A More Perfect Union: Black City, White Paper won a Medal of Excellence in Inside News Pages with Pentagram (design), Sterling Chen (design), Brian Leighton (editing), Suzette Moyer (design director and art director), Dain Saint (art director), Wesley Lowery (reporter), and Errin Haines (editor) credited.
  • Late Fall Garden, a doubletruck, won a Medal of Excellence in Inside Features Pages with Anton Klusener (designer) and Goda Trakumaite (illustration) credited.
  • A to Z Philly, a doubletruck, won a Medal of Excellence in Inside Features Pages with Anton Klusener (designer and artist) and Stephanie Farr and Evan Weiss (reporting) credited.
  • Prisons, Charles Fox photographs from A More Perfect Union, won a Medal of Excellence in Photography with Danese Kenon (photo editor). 
  • Wounded City, Jessica Griffin photographs of a weekend of gun violence, won a Medal of Excellence in Photography with Danese Kenon (photo editor) credited.
  • Bird Fans, a staff doubletruck of Eagles fans, won a Medal of Excellence in Photography with staff photographers and Frank Weise (photo editor) credited.
  • Healing Grief, from the Opinion pages, won a Medal of Excellence in Illustration with Suzette Moyer (art director) and Serena Saunders (illustration) credited.
  • Our Hair, Our Choices, from the Opinion pages, won a Medal of Excellence in Illustration with Suzette Moyer (art director) and Jessica Spence (illustration) credited.
  • Dogs I’ve Met at the Park, a doubletruck, won a Medal of Excellence in Illustration with Anton Klusener (art director) and Lars Leetaru (illustration) credited.
  • Holiday Gift Wrap, a doubletruck, won a Medal of Excellence in Illustration with Anton Klusener (art director) and Charlie Welsh (illustration) credited.
  • A Good Death, from the Opinion pages, won a Medal of Excellence in Illustration with Suzette Moyer (art director) and Vlad Alvarez (illustration) credited.
